Sue called, and said she had a tile floor installed in Hooksett, NH a couple decades ago by a neighborhood friend. It was an off white, dinged wide grout lines and a little outdated looking. She found my number on the internet and called to schedule us to remove the old tile and install some 12x24 porcelain tile She and her husband looked at Floor & Decor in Nashua.
Me and my helper started demo on ripping up the old tile. We use an old school hammer and flatbar method of labor that is tried and true. It gets the body worn down after only an hour or so, so I called my finance's brother Justin as reinforcement to finish the hallway with some sledge pounds. My helper Josh picked up the pieces and brought debris out to truck to take to dump.
Swept floor and sponged clean on way out. For foot courtesy to the homeowners. And because the old dog they have likes to plop down at random places.
Next day we mudded the subfloor and rolled out some Schluter Ditra membrane as a crack prevention measure for the large format tile to be installed on floor.
Set the tile floor using Ultraflex LFT Rapid Setting mortar so a few hours after we mudded the tile down the floor could be walked on that evening. That way the husband could get a cold beer from the fridge after coming home from work. Without having to play hopscotch or walk on eggshells.
Next day we removed the toilet and popped up the few remaining pieces of the old tile. Set Ditra down. Installed wood look tile planks on bathroom floor. Took a late lunch. Then re-set the toilet before leaving. As this is the only bathroom in this one bedroom home in Hudson, NH. Kind of prevalent in older New Hampshire houses.
In hindsight, we should have waited until the next day to set the toilet. I had to take the toilet up the next day and popped out a piece of tile that lifted up from the weight of toilet being set over it too soon using the rapid setting mortar.
Embarassing, but. Easy fix. Then, we cut in the door threshold pieces.
While I worked on the doorway tile cut, Josh cut in the tile pieces inside of bathroom closet.
The floor got cleaned. We cut out any mortar oozing into grout joints. And we grouted and sponged their new 12x24 kitchen tiles and wood plank bathroom floor.
Another happy customer. After a check was written, we scheduled to come back to remove fiberglass shower and tile bathroom walls.
