Customer called with a complaint of a previous contractor installing a tile floor in Bedford, New Hampshire with uneven tiles, lippage and varying grout widths. They were unhappy with the work this other installer did and wanted a quote to repair.
After the tile floor removal we uncovered a patched, improper subfloor installation. The other workers had cut corners, using wall sheathing as a floor substrate. And then quickly going over it. This is a weaker, unsuitable floor structure that ultimately could have caused a disaster. Especially being underneath a toilet and a bathroom cabinet vanity.
We removed the shoddy patchwork and cut in matching subfloor material. Being that it was only half inch wood, we went over that existing subfloor with a second layer of half inch plywood to strengthen the floor. Using a construction adhesive in between the two layers of plywood, and then screw fasteners.
We then installed an uncoupling membrane, Schluter Ditra, as a tile anti-fracture measure. And made for a water resistant floor under the tile. Since there is a shower stall in the bathroom.
Since we were working in a small bathroom, we decided to cut tiles prior to installation and do a dry lay custom fit before setting tile. The customer had a large format 15x30 tile to install on bathroom floor. We did the tile layout to align the vein matching of the marble look tiles on floor.
The lady of the house wanted to add a matching tile focal wall with the same material as bathroom tile floor.
We obliged, and the next day cut in her wall tile installation around window. Grouted the tile and cleaned. Completing their tile bath remodel in Bedford, NH.
Unfortunately, a large part of our work is fixing mistakes of previous contractor in tile repair work in New Hampshire.
We have even been asked to document the demolition tile removal process as we go. To later be used in civil lawsuit filings against construction company by homeowners remodeling with tile in New Hampshire area.
