Customer in Auburn, New Hampshire had a tile shower installed by another contractor less than a year ago and it already started leaking.
Upon demolition, we uncovered that the curb area was not properly waterproofed. And also, the fabric around perimeter of the shower pan was pulling loose because it was not properly adhered.
We did some surgical removal of the materials in shower pan. And removed the bottom first row of wall tile.
We then cleaned the subfloor to remove any stinky odor the older leak may have caused.
Then started to install prep for a waterproof shower pan solution for new tile.
We installed Schluter Ditra uncoupling membrane over the original subfloor to create a barrier between the floor and the new mud pan. Some waterproof Kerdi fabric was installed over wood curb and the floor to wall transition around perimeter.
A Portland cement mix was used to float a packed mud slope towards a new drain flange.
Laticrete HydroBarrier waterproofing membrane was installed for 2 coats of protection over the new mud shower pan.
Then the perimeter terminated with Schluter Kerdi Band waterproof tape.
Making this shower pan waterproof and ready for tile installation.
A leak check was conducted prior to us installing any tile. Plugged the drain and filled pan to brim with water. And let sit overnight.
We then installed a 2" ceramic mosaic tile on shower floor that was leftover from original install.
Inserted new brass finish grate over shower drain.
Installed wall tiles on bottom row in shower and front and back of curb.
Grouted and cleaned. And reinstalled curb top threshold that we salvaged from the repair removal.
