Master bath remodel in Hudson, NH with tile shower and custom floor pattern

Master bathroom remodel with 12" square tile for floor, wall and ceiling

Homeowners had fire and used insurance to remodel entire house. Starting with their master bath.

They had a framing company install studs to enlarge their master bath. Making a shower area with commode. And then adjoining a dry station for makeup with vanity. And walking closet.

Couple had a local tile shop design a floor tile and wall layout for custom shower remodel in Hudson, New Hampshire. And sourced tile material for job.

We started preparation with Ditra uncoupling membrane over subfloor. To be used in conjunction with a Schluter radiant heat system to be wired underneath tile.

Installed cement board on shower walls and ceiling. Taped and mudded joints and seams. And applied 3 coats of Laticrete HydroBan waterproofing.

Then floated a Portland cement and sand mix dry pack with a 1/4" slope towards new drain flange.

The tile design layout drawings called for a custom baseboard cut out of 12x12 pished porcelain tile. And then a pencil liner border installed just above that.

We started setting outside the shower and wrapped the layout to inside corner of shower having the corner piece be a full tile width.

The lady of house wanted a lower bench as a footrest for shaving legs. So we cut in a waterproofed foam corner bench. And mudded it to wall above 1st course of tile.

We continued the wall tile, wrapping around lower half, for a 12" tile wainscoting. Then set some 6" decorative tiles for a custom chair rail feature above that.

Inside the shower, 3x12 subway tile was set on upper half of walls, above the chair rail. With custom bullnose pieces to line the outside perimeter.

The heat wire cable and thermostat installed after all wall tile and ceiling were set. We postponed this to prevent any accidental cut in wire while working. Since it was an active jobsite.

The floor tile installation used 12" tile in a matte finish. But was installed in line with the wall tile. So the grout lines would carry mimic on the floor.

A custom cut corner clip pattern used the leftover decorative tile as an alternating dot pattern in the floor.

Leveling clip system was used to maintain grout widths and eliminate any possible lippage in adjacent tiles.

A pebble mosaic tile was set in the shower pan. Then everything was cleaned to get ready to grout.

Done by a design/install team in Amherst, New Hampshire.  The grout color choice only highlighted the inconsistent lines of tile spacing by previous installer. Which, for setting all the tile pieces in just one day. Wasn't all that bad, to be honest.  Maybe a Dutchman liner trim at the lunch break stopping point. And work full piece from the ceiling down the next day . However, with the high contrast, instantly antiquing the look of grout, with the black on white color choice. Which  They may have been able to salvage the shower with a grout removal. And maybe pop out and re-set a few of the tiles with lippage edges sticking out.
