Customer wanted to get rid of old plastic shower and replace with white tile. But desired a layout pattern design shape more unique than traditional subway tile.
She found a ceramic tile sample with this picket design for shower walls and penny tile for floor.

Out with the old, in with the new

First, demolition needed to be done for removal of old plastic shower basin and outdated wall tile.
We initially talked about the floor tile in bathroom outside the shower. But, removing vanity and toilet, question about whether or not to keep the tub, and budget, all weighed in on leaving the existing flooring for now.

Floor drain install

A new FloFx drain flange was installed tied into existing plumbing P-trap waste line.


Mud pan prep for shower tile installation 

To create a slope to drain, a 4:1 mud mortar mix was mixed and packed, floated finish with trowel for the shower pan build.



Prep materials Coated in waterproofing membrane

The cement board walls were prime coated with Mapei AquaDefense waterproofing membrane. Then, another 2 coats applied to the whole prep material install. After waiting the weekend for the mud pan to wick.

Everybody is human. Mistakes happen. But, we can help fix it.  We were called to quote removal of white subway tile shower with black grout. Done by a design/install team in Amherst, New Hampshire.  The grout color choice only highlighted the inconsistent lines of tile spacing by previous installer. Which, for setting all the tile pieces in just one day. Wasn't all that bad, to be honest.  Maybe a Dutchman liner trim at the lunch break stopping point. And work full piece from the ceiling down the next day . However, with the high contrast, instantly antiquing the look of grout, with the black on white color choice. Which  They may have been able to salvage the shower with a grout removal. And maybe pop out and re-set a few of the tiles with lippage edges sticking out.   Outdated fiberglass shower removed. And waterproof wallboard prep construction for new tile shower. Half inch waterproof foam board wall panels installed over existing wall studs. Sealant applied in seams, corners, tub line, and ceiling perimeter. Tile cut outside, and installed to accommodate plumbing fixtures. Aligned in layout pattern approved by customer prior to installation. Corner shelves installed for storage in shower.
